How Long Do Scleral Contacts Last?

Scleral contact lenses are designed for durability, typically lasting one to two years with proper care. However, their lifespan depends on several factors, including material quality, wear frequency, and maintenance routines.

Factors Affecting Lens Longevity:

  • Material & Quality – High-quality gas-permeable materials resist scratches and deposits better.

  • Wear & Tear – Daily wearers may need replacements sooner.

  • Cleaning & Storage – Using appropriate solutions and proper hygiene prevents buildup and warping.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Lenses:

  • Scratches, warping, or discomfort

  • Persistent haze or reduced vision quality

Best Practices to Extend the Life of Your Scleral Lenses:

To get the most out of your lenses, consistent care is essential. Here are the key steps I recommend to all my patients:

  • Daily Cleaning: Use an approved gas-permeable lens cleaner to remove deposits. Never use tap water.

  • Fresh Solution Every Time: Never reuse saline. Always replace it with fresh, sterile solution.

  • Proper Storage: Keep lenses in a clean case and replace the case every 2-3 months to avoid contamination.

  • Clean Hands Only: Wash hands thoroughly before handling lenses to avoid transferring oils or bacteria.

  • Regular Checkups: Even if your lenses feel fine, periodic visits to your eye care provider ensure they remain in top condition.
